Clearly a sense of entitlement among one group and its absence in the other provided the middle-class contingent a much better foundation for educational advancement.
Sometimes working-class students receive strong support. A pair of academic writers indicated that they were able to teach history and English at the college level because as working-class college students themselves they were fortunate enough to have found passionately involved, caring mentors. Historian Richard A. Greenwald indicated that âthe faculty in the history department at Queens College recognized me as a human being and engaged my mind in ways that were unknown to meâ (Greenwald and Grant 1999, 34â35). Clearly these mentors nurtured the studentsâ sense of entitlement. It would be interesting to know whether this experience is commonâthat working-class individuals who have succeeded in upper-middle-class occupations have had mentors playing a prominent role. At various times working-class people use social capital.
